CONTEXT
At Impact Valley, our mission is to empower people for collective positive impact through sustainable innovation. We believe that collaboration across sectors and within one sector is key to addressing today’s most pressing challenges — and we see hackathons as a powerful, practical tool to spark this transformation.
In April 2024, we accompanied NTT DATA in organising a Hackathon for Good — an initiative to support their long-time partner Child Focus, the Belgian center for missing and sexually exploited children, tackle five critical challenges through the lens of technology and innovation.
As lead designers and facilitators, our role was to ensure not the smooth delivery of the event, the NTT facilitators training, the quality of outcomes, and depth of collaboration to ensure long-term impact.

HIGHLIGHTS
We designed a full end-to-end journey for this hackathon — ensuring it was far more than just a two-day event.
Together with NTT and Child Focus, we:
– Refined 5 real, urgent challenges into innovation-ready problems (including privacy-tech trade-offs, digital threat detection, and tools for helping children report abuse).
– Orchestrated a cross-company recruitment effort to bring in IT professionals, legal experts, UX designers, and developers.
– Built and facilitated the hackathon using our 4D innovation methodology (Discover, Design, Define, Develop), a hybrid of Design Thinking and Lean Startup, adapted for social innovation.
– Embedded Child Focus experts and NTT facilitators in every team, ensuring contextual understanding and grounded ideation.
– Delivered a kick-off and follow-up framework to maximise readiness and post-event continuity.
– Captured and structured the outputs for further development and implementation.
Each team was guided by technical tools (Fishbone diagrams, How Might We questions, Value Proposition Canvas, Mission Model Canvas, prototyping sprints), and coached toward implementable, high-impact solutions — not just ideas.

IMPACT
– 80+ participants, from diverse companies and expertise areas, co-created in a shared space of trust and urgency.
– 5 solution concepts were pitched, with tangible implementation roadmaps. These are now being carried forward by NTT and Child Focus teams.
– Wellbeing of analysts, image dissemination, and child-friendly reporting tools were among the themes tackled with empathy and technical precision.
– New connections were built between people and organisations who might never have met otherwise — creating a lasting innovation ecosystem around child protection.
– We built a replicable model: one that others can adapt to their purpose, their cause, their ecosystem.
